I wanted a desk for my sons room so headed to the thrift store to see what I could find. I ended up bringing this lovely laminate piece home for just $20. My only advice when looking for used furniture is always give it a good shake to make sure it is sturdy!
BEFORE:
You can paint laminate pieces of furniture just like wood pieces. One added benefit is that laminate pieces general don't have a lot of gouges or scratches that need to be sanded out. I did run sand paper over the whole piece before painting it, just to make sure the paint gripped well but it didn't require too much elbow grease. I followed these great tips for painting laminate furniture found at Centsational Girl.
Once the paint was finished and fully cured I used this stuff to give it a nice clear protective coat. I love that this stuff comes in a spray can now!
AFTER:
Here it is sporting a lovely coat of Benjamin Moore's "Hale Navy"
and some new hardware from Hobby lobby.
Wow! What a great makeover. :)
ReplyDeleteLove it!! It turned out great! I take it you filled the old hardware holes? Just with a wood filler, perhaps?
ReplyDeleteYes, I did have to fill in the old hardware holes with some wood filler before painting. It isn't too hard to do but I have found that it turns out better if I do two rounds of filling and sanding- it just gets it more smooth.
ReplyDeleteGood to know, thanks so much for replying! On a side note, I went looking at showhomes with a friend this past weekend and one house had panelling very similar to your dining room and I was all "this is just like the Casablanca Transformation". Of course I was met with a "what's that" but, needless to say, you now have another fan! ;)
DeleteFabulous as usual! I just love your clean, crisp style.
ReplyDeleteWhere in Northern Utah do you buy Bejamin Moore paint?
ReplyDeleteIn Bountiful you can get it at South Fork Hardware on 2600 S. (formerly Ace). In Kaysville there is a store called Wilson's Paint that carries it. If you don't live near either of these I guess I would recommend just going through the phone book and calling up your local paint stores to see who carries it. Good Luck!
DeleteThe desk looks great!!!!! Love your blog!
ReplyDeletewow! its amazing how some new paint and new hardware can totally transform old and ugly furniture! I def need to do this to revamp some of my furniture!

Bravo! It always amazes me how great pieces look after a revamp. Great job, and I bet whomever donated that would want it back now! I hope you're doing well... but you're killing me with no updates on the dining room! I'm really curious to see how the new, painted chairs look.
ReplyDeleteTake care!

Darla your comment made me laugh! It's killing me too to have no dining room chairs! They have been painted white, and I finally decided on a fabric and that has now been shipped so the chairs will go off to the upholstery store this week. I don't know how long that will take but hopefully we'll have a reveal on that soon! Thanks for your interest in the casablanca!
