Before
AFTER
When we first moved into our home we had the builders add a drywall soffit above all the cabinetry with plans that we would one day add crown and other trim work to it. While we had the dining room finish work done we had them complete the kitchen soffit as well.
More Before's
It is 3 pieces of trim - crown, a baseboard hung upside down, and pin mold at the bottom of the soffit.
We had them trim out the windows as well.
DONE!!!
By the Way - The new white leather barstools from Target are holding up great so I think I'll be stenciling them soon (well, kind of soon)!
Did you leave the orginal window seal in on the kitchen windows and just frame around them? It all looks great! I just need to get over my power tool fear!
ReplyDeleteYes the window sills stayed - it just seemed a waste to pull them out only to put in new ones! Good for you if you plan to "get over your power tool fear." That is a fear I plan to hang on to for life (other than a drill at least)!
DeleteAmy, what color are your cabinets? kch1860@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteIt is a "custom blend" that the cabinet company uses and doesn't give out the formula for - sorry. It is pretty close to Kwal "Apple Peel" though!
DeleteI'm sorry if you've answered this and I missed it. Where is that cute fork from on the wall??
ReplyDeleteHobby Lobby, it is in their "resin" section and they often sell the "resin" items at 50% off.
DeleteHi Amy, I just found your blog while searching for soffit trim work. What a great example of how much better they can look! I am in the midst of painting my cabinets and I'm taking the color up over the soffit as well. I want to add crown to it too and I was trying to show my husband a photo of how it would look. I could see it clearly in my mind! Thanks for the great photos so I can show him how it would look with the crown just over the soffit and not the whole room. Can you tell me what color your walls are. I'm look at similar color right now and having a hard time deciding. And I have company coming next week :)
ReplyDeleteGreat pics on the soffit. I can't wait to get started on mine!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love your home! Can I ask how high the ceilings are in your kitchen? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThey are 10 feet.
DeleteHi Amy! I've looked your blog over because I thought I remember you saying somewhere what kind of countertops you used. I can't seem to find that but I love them! Am I correct that I read they are actually a Formica?!
ReplyDeleteYou remember correctly - they are cheap laminate countertops! They are "Wilsonart Laminate", in Eastern Accents, color Asian Night.
DeleteHI Amy..........your house looks great. I am finishing up my kitchen remodel and want to add crown and trim to my soffit similiar to how you did it. My question to you is did you paint the crown and trim the same color as your cabinets or is it the same as your other trim work around the house?? Thanks
ReplyDeleteI had a painter paint the trim work on the soffit for me. He took one of my cabinet doors to a paint store to have the color matched. It's not an "exact" match but as close as they could get it and it looks pretty good. Good luck on your kitchen!
DeleteHi Amy, I am in the process of coping your kitchen soffit idea. We have been able to find all of the moulding except for the pin moulding. Do you know where you got it from? I have had the hardest time trying to find it. Thank you! LOVE you kitchen!
ReplyDeleteMy trim guys got all of their moldings from R&G, a local trim place in Layton, Utah. I can't remember on this particular piece if they may have actually made it. Honestly any similar piece of trim will look good - good luck on your kitchen!
DeleteAbsolutely beautiful. I have a question and would appreciate any suggestions. I redid my kitchen a year ago. I wanted to remove the soffit but was quoted $5000 by the contractor. I have despised them ever since. I have found several solutions like yours by making it blend into the cabinet with molding. My problem is the soffit extends a few inches past the cabinet and there is no room for molding between the two. Any suggestions to blend in the extension as well?
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry I don't have any brilliant ideas for your extension, however I think your soffit would still be greatly improved by just adding the molding to the front. Start there and you may find the extension doesn't look so bad or you may be able to better see a solution once the front is done.
DeleteI just came across your blog! Wow, I love your design work! I was curious about the paint color on your kitchen walls. It looks gray online. Would you be so kind to let me know what color your walls are? Thank you so much! Beautiful Kitchen!
ReplyDeleteIt is Benjamin Moore's Ozark Shadows- it is a great grey! Thanks
DeleteSuch a great idea - we used this on our soffit!
ReplyDeleteAmy,
ReplyDeleteI love the "pin molding" you put at the bottom of the soffit. Where did you get it? I have been trying to find something like that with the detail but can only find 1/2 round molding. We are keeping our soffits on purpose we have a 1910 farmhouse on a dirt road surrounded by working farms so the dust collects and that would keep the tops of our cabinets from getting so dirty! Thanks so much!
I believe all the molding was purchased at R&G molding in clearfield, Utah. Best of luck to you!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for posting this as I have soffits and wanted to pull them out but afraid that there will be too many wires, etc. I am going to do the same thing that you have done with my kitchen!
ReplyDeleteAmy, may I ask how many inches your soffit is?
ReplyDeletemine are about 19 inches
